This is a zine dedicated to Symphonic and gothic metal

REVIEW OF THE NEW EP OF XANDRIA ” FIRE & ASHES”2015

This is the second release with the vocalist Dianne van Giersbergen .The EP features 3 new tracks , two rerecorded and remastered tracks and also 2 cover songs.

I don’t understand why Xandria make this EP with only 3 new songs, the only reason that I can think is because of commercial success and under the pressure of their label.Anyway this is a very bad choice for one big band.

Lets see the songs track by track:

1. Voyage of the Fallen:

The songs starts with epic symphonic sound ,operatic style voice of Dianne, with excellent choir and beautiful arrangements.Power guitar riffs and pounding drums. All under the recipe of the Epica’s sound.

RUNNING TIME: 4.46

RATING : 9.5

2. Unembraced:

We running a piece with symphonic arrangements and the female voice enters as a great soprano, heavier song with catchy keyboards between.

RUNNING TIME: 4.27

RATING : 9

3. In Remembrance:

Very softly start with soothing female voice with some sadness in her tone.A symphonic metal ballad with Dianne to lead the song,Nothing more or less.

RUNNING TIME: 5.01

RATING : 9

4. I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) (Meat Loaf cover):

This is the cover of Meat Loaf from 1993 song, with guest vocals of Valerio Recenti, the Italian singer of the Dutch alternative metal band my propane. The original song was in the length time 7.52 minutes. Why one symphonic metal band cover one pop – rock song? Maybe they think : “We ‘d do anything for money”.

RUNNING TIME: 7.26

RATING : 2

5. Ravenheart (originally on Ravenheart, 2004):

The original song from the album “Ravenheart ” in 2004 with Lisa Schaphaus in vocals and was in time 5 seconds more! Oh yes to make some difference ( vocals range difference!!). Sorry I will consider and this song as cover and I prefer the old one and original with Lisa’s voice!

RUNNING TIME: 3.49

RATING : 5

6. Now & Forever (originally on India, 2005):

Again one rerecording song ,this time from the album “India” (2005) .The original song was with the singer Lisa Middelhauve and was longer in time (5.17 min) .Now this song is only 3.24 minutes. Also here I prefer the past original song .

RUNNING TIME: 3.24

RATING : 5

7. Don’t Say a Word (Sonata Arctica cover):

In the last track of the album we have a cover of Sonata Arctica from their album “Reckoning Night” (2004).Bad choce and in my opinion the voice of Tony Kakko is much better for this song!

RUNNING TIME: 6.08

RATING : 3
Finnaly This EP is recommended only for the fanatic collectors fan of Xandria, the rest must ignore this release.

RATING : 4.71/10
